We have been ill.....

We have been doing lots of this in our house this last week...
My 2 girls and MissJ in particular
have been coughing and sneezing and
coughing and also some more coughing
Lots of honey and lemon drinks to be had for all...
First we thought it was Hayfever... he he
But today we had a test for Whooping Cough.
It seems to be a bit around in our city lately...
Lots of children have it, and it may be a new strain?
I so hope not as that means no going out until it passes...
I had heard from a dear old friend they call it the 100 day cough
Thankfully we are not contagious for that long.
 What remedies did our grandparents
use when it was around years ago?
I would love to hear what remedies anyone
remembers they used or their granparents used?

That is so awful, poor wee girls. We experience the cough of 100 days when living in Asia, and yep, it was 100 days from start to finish, very weird. Hope things improve quickly.

Hi Dawn,

My Grandson got whooping cough and ended up in the hospital. He needed serious drugs. Whooping cough is making a comeback because fewer people are imunizing their children for it today. It can be serious. Hope it is not that.

I remember my girls having whooping cough ,try putting a few books under the legs at the foot of their bed ,the doctor advised us to do that and it really did help .

Hi Dawn,
I hope you are all feeling much better soon. My son had a nasty cough that wouldn't go away, but it wasn't whooping cough. Whooping cough makes a whooping noise and you cough so hard you cannot breathe. I remember as I child thinking it sounded cute until I got it...the doctors said I would have died if I hadn't been immunised. The disease is worse than the vax risks, but as disease numbers reduce, people worry about vaccine risks instead. As fewer get vaccinated herd immunity goes, and the disease makes a comeback...infants are particularly vulnerable.
I sure hope that isn't what you've got.
Hugs, Sharon

Sorry to hear you have been doing the round robins in your house - it is hard with everyone sharing.... I have always been an advocate of Echinacea - I have very few things in my medicine cupboard but that is always there....
Best wishes for good health

I had a friend whose baby had it a couple of months ago. She was in the WCH for over 2 weeks and was in a very bad way. Yes, many parents are not immunizing. It also is an immunization that needs boosting every 15 years or so and teenagers and adults are not having that done which makes little children more vulnerable.

Hope you all get well soon!

Hope you are all feeling better today. I use Echinacea, esp. when I first feel the cold coming on.

Am sorry to hear you're feeling under the weather ... I love to add freshly grated ginger and/or peppermint leaves to my honey and lemon concoction. It's lovely!

Oh your poor little ones - we've had it here too, don't think it's whooping cough although I know it's going around.
Not an old remedy, but I tried it on the boys and it works...Vick's Vapor Rub, usually you use it on the chest but if you put it on the soles of the feet at night, it will quiet a cough. I need to do that tonight, I completely forgot about it until you posted this. The coughing at night is the worst. I hope you're all feeling better quickly and that it's not whooping cough!

Hola, Dawn!
GOOGLE TRADUCTOR:
"Hi, Dawn! I hope you and your family feel a little better.
He said something strange, but it really works and is very simple.
Take a white onion and cut it to half, place on a plate and always have this dish with the onion very close to the person who is coughing. Over the hours, you will see that decreases the cough and finally a couple of days - at best - the cough disappears. The onion will be getting faded little by little each time. Grandmothers what they said is that the smell and the fumes of the onion make these tubes are more open and that allows the patient to breathe much better and onion "absorb" everything bad that the person is not expelled into the air. It is perhaps a bit annoying smell, but it really works.
Also before going to sleep, put 'Vicks Vapor rub "well spread on the soles of the feet, wear socks and sleep much better.
Ancient remedies ... but effective!
They are better soon! A hug!"

I got whooping cough as a kid and my mom gave me tea and honey. I got it so often that I hate tea and honey now. When my son got it, I took him to the doctor and got antibiotics - it did the trick. I'd send him to school with a thermos of peppermint tea to drink after recess because the running around caused him to cough. That would settle his throat right down and calm him down.

There has been a resurgence of whooping cough in the U.S. as well. I say this just from what I have heard on the news. Not a fun thing to deal with. Wishing your little ones a speedy recovery.

Hope your day is super good even with this illness.

Dear Dawn, Sorry to here that the girls are sick. My Grandmother and mum and now i use it rub vicks under the feet and put socks on. It works for us. My DD 21 was here the other night with a cough and when i told here to do it well lets say she did not put the vicks on. BUT she wondered why and how she woke up with socks on in the morning. But i got some sleep after i rubbed her feet and put the socks on and the coughing stopped for a bit.
Hugs to you all.

In less then 48 hours is all gone!
