My best ever birthday present was:
On my 50th Birthday I was given a huge copper fish for my lounge wall from my darling Hubby Stew. I had not expected it at all .. and that is what made is so special. (It was HORRIBLY expensive and he must have had to spirit away money for weeks to get it for me!)

When I was married about 25 years I got a very beautiful golden watch. For all the times my DH said he had forgotten to give me something nice.

Liz Schaffner said...

That is easy...I just got it for my 5oth birthday this year...an iPad.
I think the reason I was so suprised is that I hadn't even wished it...I had said to my DH in passing...one day when we have money we don't know what to do with, I would like an ipad...I guess he found money we didn't know what to do with ..LOL
Hugs,Liz
P.S: I love surprises...especially the crafty kind

My sweetheart gave me a few years ago such a precious surprise gift. 3days off to spend however I wanted to. And he took over the houshold and our 5 kids. It still makes my heart warm when I think of it and remember how I spent those 3 days!

Christmas a few years ago I was going to be home alone, DH was working and the girls were going to be with their partners families.. Come 23rd December I was presented with air tickets to fly south to be with all my sisters and my mum. Of course everyone but me knew about it - I was so shocked and just cried and cried - silly eh?

My best gift was being reunited in 2002 with my teenage sweetheart after being apart for 27 years and realising it was others influence not ours that had kept us apart. We have been together ever since.

Thinking back, I would have to say the ring I got for my 19th from my boyfriend at the time. Its design was the exact design I'd had in my mind as my ultimate ring - the one I wanted for my engagement ring, even though it was a simple ring. The fact that I hadn't told anyone about this design wish really threw me ... made me think he was actually proposing even though we'd only been together 6 mths. It wasn't that ring, but it really touched me that he'd taken the time to know me well enough to find the perfect one. We broke up almost 2mths to the day he gave me that ring, but I never gave it up - and it is one of my favourites to this day.
Though it still holds its sentimental value, it is now more a reminder that love is real - that it is out there for me, even though it seems sometimes it is so far out of my grasp that the idea of finding it again is like me going up into space. It is also the one piece of jewelry that I will be devastated if I ever lose it.

Our first grandson arrived, but our daughter lived in Japan, and there was no way we could afford to go and visit. Unbeknown to us, staff, students and board of the Christian College where we worked, plus our Church family, all got together and started putting money aside. Can you imagine our surprise when one morning my DH and I were presented with Air Tickets to Japan!!! Of course we needed the tissues!

I once received a bunch of flowers so big I could hardly carry them & was then taken to a boutique to pick out a new outfit. Those were the days! Though once we became a couple I wouldn't let him waste money like that any more - haha! Tracee xx

When I had my second son DH didn't give me a maternity gift. Very unlike him and that made me worry a lot. ... It wasn't the gift I wanted but iI was worried sick about him and me. Was this not what he wanted after all, didn't he love me, our son, was he troubled...? Well after two months I asked him and he just grinned and said there was a reason but he wouldn't tell me why. He is like that. So I took a bit more easy after taht and we went on with our lifes. When Jens was 4 months old I got a letter from a famous jewelry shop in Copenhagen saying that I should come by for a fitting. I was really angry. It wasn't about the gift for me and the last thing I wanted was something he bought out of a bad conscience. So I yelled a bit. And a bit more. He just said there was a reason and I needed to get the story from the designer. Men!!!! But I went into the store after all and meet the designer who told me lars had been in there when I was around 6 months pregnant. They had designed a ring together that would hold 2 colored diamonds in the color of our childrens eyes.. Son no. 1 had brown eyes and we assumed number 2 would be as well. But they decided to wait and see just to be sure. And of course no. 2 had bright blue eyes so They decided to wait a bit before finalizing the ring. Jens' eyes kept getting bluer and bluer and first when he was 4 months old Lars felt sure that they wouldn't turn brown. And then my ring was finalized with a brown and a blue diamond :) I wear it ALWAYS. It is my best surprise ever and holds more value than gold and diamonds do normally.

The biggest surprise present I've got have to be last years christmas gift from my dear children. I was told on the evening the 23.dec to open my christmaspresent. At first I would not do it, but the told me that I had to do it. And in a heavy package was photos of Rusken. My two children had bought me a aby cat as a christmas present. And the reason why I had to open my present one day too early was that on christmas eve we were going to get him and bring him home. Guess who did a happy dancing at that time :)

Occassionally I would make a comment that someday I would love to visit ALASKA. As a lover of brisk, cool weather, and mountain scenery, Alaska just seemed a perfect destination to me. Such magnificent and unspoiled beauty! Well one day our daughter, about 24 at the time, stopped in to visit. She just said something like "I have something, and I just want you to say yes, you'll take it. She refused to say what it was, and my husband and I were just looking at each other like...OMG, what could it possibly be. She's a vet tech and a huge animal/reptile lover (she's owned everything from tarantula's, snakes, and lizards to a cat and dog), so we were afraid maybe she had some sort of critter needing a home. With much trepidation, we finally agreed to take whatever it was she had. She pulled a small wrapped package out of her purse (and we breathed a HUGE sigh of relief). Inside was a travel guide to Alaska, along with a note saying that we have always been there for her, helping her move (many times!), given her so much extra financial help etc., that she wanted to do something for us. She said that we never take vacations, and that she wanted us to promise to accept $1,000 from her to go towards my dream Alaskan vacation, and that she knew the only way we would ever go is if we were forced to! We were quite shocked because she is not one to express or show her emotions at all. After some crying on my part, and with a huge amount of guilt over taking her hard earned money, which we really did not want to take, we promised we would put it towards the vacation because it meant so much to her. AND WE DID go on an amazing 7-day cruise (our first cruise) to Alaska, and it was just as gorgeous and spectacular as I thought it would be! A vacation of a lifetime made so much more special because of the unspoken love behind it.

My first car was a 1966 Mustang, flash forward to 30 years later. I always wanted to have another of those cars. I came home from work the first part of December, cold snowing, just miserable out. I could see my husband and sons sitting in the living room as I kept pushing the garage button to get in. I was not happy they were sitting there, not finding out why my garage door would not open. I get out of my car, walk to front door and say well thanks for opening the garage, look out the glass doors to the garage, and there set a 1966 Mustang!! It was not in the best shape, but my husband and sons restored it for me.
I will never forget this, or the love in their eyes when they told me it was for me!!

My biggest surprise present that involved a gift was when my husband bought my first Bernina for a Christmas gift. I cried and cried. Another surprise was one evening he insisted we go out to supper and I was beat from teaching all day. However, when we arrived at the restaurant my oldest daughter was there from Richmond... it was Mother's Day weekend and I forgot all about it.

Thanks for hosting and congrats on the 800!! Glad to be one of them :o)

Hands down it was the xmas my hubby put this huge & HEAVY box under the tree. For days I was crabby as I thought he went & bought me a new sewing machine (he doesn't know squat about sewing). It wasn;t a sewing machine. It was a sauna stove!!!! The next week he built me a cedar sauna in our basement to use after skiing on our cold winter days. That was the best surprise ever.

Marsha said...

My sewing machine is my best surprise gift. My husband was on a hunting trip and I wandered over to the machine store and saw exactly what I wanted. When hubby got home I told him about it and how I would save to buy it. He picked up the car keys, ushered me into the car and away we went. We brought it home that day and I have been using it almost everyday since! He is a keeper!

My sister in law and I had been talking about getting together for a girl's day out. She quilts, and I scrapbook, so we thought we could do some shopping, etc. It never quite happened, but finally one day she invited me to a quilt retreat, and she would pay half for my birthday gift. I reminded her that I didn't quilt, and she said I could bring my scrapbooking, or whatever I wanted to work on. By the end of the weekend, I decided I wanted to try quilting, and the rest is history! Did she know I would walk away hooked on a new hobby?? Congrats on the milemark on your beautiful blog.

My biggest surprise present ever was a NEW car.. I about died. I had gotten DH a new fabulous grill for fathers day one year. Well he had to do me one better, he came home for the next holiday with a brand new car for me. We had NEVER owned a NEW car in our lives.. I am still driving her, and she is all paid for and I love my baby! It isn't fancy, but it is mine :)

So now I've been trying to think of what my biggest surprise gift has been- and I can't think of any big surprises- how sad is that.... I guess mine is still to come :-) But I can tell you about my Hubby's big surprise gift- That was when I "kidnapped" him and took him to Paris for his 40th birthday- he thought I had gone mad when I served him breakfast in bed at 4 AM (We had to leave early to go to the airport) That was a lot of fun though!!!

My biggest surprise was my cozy chair in my livingroom. About 10 years ago I found this chair that I thought was perfect, I told my husband and thought nothing of it for a while and one day I came home and there it was sitting in our livingroom. It was a birthday gift that he had saved for and brought home to me as a surprise. I still love to sit in this lovely cozy chair each morning. I am just starting my Out of the Box block for August. Thanks for sharing them.

My best surprise was the 'just because gift' that DH gave me some years ago of a pair of ruby earrings. He really is wonderful!!

One year on our anniversary my husband gave me a sweet little bud vase filled with rose buds and baby's breath. Now this may not seem like anything unusual to most, but I was absolutely blown away! My husband isn't a romantic type and thinks cut flowers are dumb (they're just going to die). It was a wonderful surprise, and I filled that little vase with lots of cut flowers from my garden. btw It's the only time he ever gave me cut flowers.

Best present ever was on my 14th birthday about 100 years ago. I wanted a duvet and my parents told me that would be too expensive and i believed them (i didnt know money at age 14). After breakfast and sitting down for coffee and a bit of morningcake and receiving a book as a gift i went upstairs to read the book. On my bed was the duvet with the loveliest green cover (green i love green!). Within 5 seconds i was downstairs again bouncing up and down saying thank you thank you thank you to my parents and wore it down to rags!

I'm so glad you had a lovely day and got some lovely goodies!
I got a lovely surprise for my birthday this year! My DH and kids brought me a little wrapped parcel while I still in bed, which I opened and it was a coffee/spice grinder. I thought it was a nice gift (seeing we're all into Masterchef I was thinking of some yummy things I could make) ... and then they brought in a much bigger box and it was a coffee machine! They tricked me!! I love my new coffee machine, especially because I wasn't expecting it!

Hubby is not so big on gift giving on the traditional days, so it is usually an unexpected surprise when he gives me something. The best one is my marshmallow pink cane chair just a couple of weeks ago, which I have blogged about. (the best because of the way it came about and that I had no idea he even knew about it.)
My other "best" if I can have 2, was my son making a surprise visit the week before my 50th birthday. He couldnt get time off for my birthday but made the effort to come the week before it. Totally shocked the socks off me when he walked in the door.
Not surprised at the 800+ followers - your blog reflects you so well.

In 1988, my dd was due on my birthday...well about the 7th month, I became ill and had to spend time in the hospital. The prognosis for a well birth wasn't good. I was discharged three weeks prior to my birthday and although my daughter arrived in that week and two weeks before her date; she was healthy and hadn't suffered any ill effects! I considered that the best birthday present ever! A live, healthy, and cute little baby girl. Trust me, with all that was going on at that time in my life, her birth was best thing to happen. I love that young lady...now 22 yo...

I thought my husband had forgotten me for Christmas. We prepped for our 2 little girls and drove 2000 miles to be with his parents. Half way through the morning he handed me a small box. I waited and he urged me to open it. When I did, I found a small piece to a food processor I knew we couldn't afford. I wept. How foolish of me to think of my poor self. Four months before Christmas, he had planned it and had people go in on the gift. I use it everyday and remember how much he loves and thinks of me AND how grateful I am to have him. Sometimes, I still cry over it.

The greatest surprise I had was when I was about nine years old and my parents gave me a music box with a dancing ballerina inside. I love music boxes and I still have with me.

My biggest surprise was probably the puppy I got for my birthday when I was about 10.

My biggest birthday present ever was an arbor/gate and fence on the side of the house. (Actually a piece of fence it goes nowhere, just a bit of privacy entering backyard and flower garden in progress and very pretty. DGS-12yo says it's the stupidous thing he ever heard of.)

The biggest surprise gift I ever got was seasons tickets to the local players theater for me and both of my daughters. We could get all dressed up, go eat dinner at McDonalds, and go to the theater to se the plays put on by the local talent, and it was like being RICH!! We had such a wonderful time

My daughter made me laminated place mats with family photos on them for Christmas about 15 years ago when she was a teenager. I didn't know she was making them - somehow she spirited away many pictures. They are fabulous still, get used almost daily and are enjoyed by family and friends alike.

Hi Dawn, well the best gift i ever received is on the different/corny side.My son used to watch me cutting up letters and addresses off mail received, i used to have a lot of pen pals and would keep the letters for awhile before getting rid of them. Anyhoo he bought me a paper shredder and at the time thought what a " different" present but i actually love it to bits, very strange??
Will do my best to blog.. have a bad connection tonight. One question though.. is Sunday the 14th not the 15th? It is my grandsons first birthday and it is tomorrow the 14th. Hugss
